FAQs on BHRT Through Perimenopause, Menopause and Post-Menopause for Women

More and more women are talking about Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) in Kansas — and for good reasons. It’s understandable because many patients who come to see me are already feeling the grueling symptoms even before menopause. Whether you’re in the early stages of perimenopause, experiencing the peak changes of menopause or adjusting to life in post-menopause, BHRT offers a tailored solution that aligns with your body’s needs. If you’re tired of not feeling quite right and don’t want to go through synthetic treatments, BHRT might just be what you need. It’s all about working with your body to get those hormones in balance, making sure the care you get is just right for you. BHRT offers you that chance, providing a natural way to tackle hormonal issues head-on, so you can keep feeling and looking fantastic.

What is BHRT and How Does It Work?

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a treatment designed to alleviate symptoms caused by imbalances in hormone levels, often associated with the stages of menopause (perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause) and other hormonal changes.  BHRT uses hormones chemically identical to those produced by the human body, such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, derived from plant sources.

As we age, our hormones decline and their levels shift. We can feel it mentally, emotionally and physically. Hormone optimization is incredibly important as it plays a huge role in how we feel, sleep and our brain functions daily.

BHRT has the ability to significantly reduce menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings, support overall well-being and address concerns related to aging, such as skin health and weight management, making it a preferred option for those seeking a natural approach to hormone replacement therapy.

In their position statement, the North American Menopause Society stated that “Hormone therapy remains the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and the genitourinary syndrome of menopause and has been shown to prevent bone loss and fracture.”

What Are the Stages of Menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, unfolding through several stages, each with its unique set of symptoms and hormonal changes. Understanding these stages can help women better deal with this transition period.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transitional period directly before menopause, usually lasting from a few months to several years. Some of my patients experience the symptoms for 7 to 10 years. Hormone production from the ovaries becomes more unpredictable, leading to more pronounced fluctuations in menstrual cycle length, frequency and symptom intensity. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes and vaginal dryness. This stage ends when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, marking the official entry into menopause.

Menopause

Menopause is confirmed after a woman has not had a menstrual period for one year. At this point, the ovaries have significantly reduced the production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Symptoms experienced during perimenopause may continue or intensify, including sleep problems, mood swings and changes in sexual function. It’s a definitive marker of the end of a woman’s reproductive years.

Post-Menopause

Post-menopause comprises the years after menopause has occurred. Hormonal levels stabilize, but the lower levels of estrogen increase the risk of various health issues, including osteoporosis and heart disease. While some symptoms may lessen or disappear, others like vaginal dryness and changes in libido, may persist. Post-menopausal women are encouraged to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting regular check-ups to manage any long-term health risks.

Who Should Consider BHRT?

Here’s the lowdown on who might consider taking this path:

  1. Women Navigating the Stages of Menopause: The journey through menopause can feel like a rollercoaster, with hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings and other symptoms making daily life challenging. BHRT offers hope, aiming to smooth out these fluctuations and restore a sense of normalcy and balance.
  2. Those Experiencing Hormonal Imbalances: It’s not just about menopause. If your body’s hormones are out of whack for any reason, such as stress, thyroid issues or the aftermath of pregnancy, BHRT can help recalibrate your system.

BHRT VS. HRT

Understanding the distinctions between BHRT and traditional HRT is imperative in order to guide you toward the therapy best aligned with your health goals and lifestyle preferences. Here’s a detailed look at how BHRT differs from traditional HRT and the advantages it may offer:

  1. Natural vs. Synthetic: The most significant difference between BHRT and traditional HRT lies in the makeup of the hormones used. Traditional HRT relies on synthetic hormones, which are designed to mimic the effects of natural hormones but don’t match them exactly. On the other hand, BHRT uses bio-identical hormones derived from plant sources and modified to be chemically identical to the hormones your body produces. This means your body recognizes and uses them just like its hormones.
  2. Safety and Side Effects: BHRT hormones are identical to your body’s own, so they tend to work more harmoniously within your system, decreasing potential side effects. Many women report fewer issues with BHRT compared to traditional HRT.
  3. Customization is Key: While traditional HRT often comes in standard doses and formulations, your healthcare provider can tailor BHRT precisely, allowing for a more personalized approach to therapy. This means your treatment can adapt to your specific hormonal imbalances, providing a more effective solution to your symptoms.
  4. Improved Efficacy: The exact match of BHRT hormones to the body’s natural hormones means they can more effectively bind to the appropriate receptors, improving efficacy in managing symptoms.

How Can BHRT Alleviate the Symptoms at Different Stages of Menopause?

A lot of women who come to my clinic at Leawood Total Wellness who are even in the perimenopause stage complain about fatigue, a lack of energy and sex drive or skin and hair changes.

BHRT’s strength lies in its ability to mimic the body’s natural hormones, thereby addressing the root cause of perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause symptoms: hormonal imbalance. When hormones like estrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate and eventually decrease, symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings and fatigue can significantly disrupt daily life. BHRT replenishes these declining hormone levels, restoring balance and, consequently, alleviating the intensity and frequency of these symptoms. The result? A smoother transition through menopause, marked by improved well-being and a return to a more stable, energetic daily life.

Moreover, the personalized nature of BHRT means that each woman’s unique hormonal needs are taken into account, allowing for a tailored treatment approach. This customization addresses the subtler, equally challenging issues like vaginal dryness, bone density loss and libido changes.

According to the Journal of Prescribing Practice, “The results demonstrated a significant improvement of 52% in quality of life after bioidentical hormone replacement therapy [BHRT] treatment. All 21 menopausal symptoms assessed were greatly reduced after BHRT treatment.”

Can BHRT Assist in Addressing Aging Concerns?

BHRT extends its beneficial reach beyond easing menopausal symptoms, venturing into the broader landscape of aging concerns. As the body ages, hormonal imbalances can exacerbate the visible signs of aging, such as skin elasticity loss, wrinkles and changes in body composition. BHRT offers a promising avenue for halting and potentially reversing some of these signs. By reintroducing hormones that mimic the body’s natural ones, BHRT can stimulate the skin’s collagen production, essential for maintaining its firmness and elasticity, contributing to a more youthful appearance.

According to the North American Menopause Society, “Estrogen therapy increased epidermal and dermal thickness, increased collagen and elastin content and improved skin moisture, with fewer wrinkles.”

Is BHRT Safe?

Understanding the safety profile and potential side effects of BHRT is crucial for anyone considering this treatment. Given the personalized nature of BHRT, the risk of side effects and overall safety can be significantly influenced by the specific hormone levels and formulations used, underscoring the importance of consulting with a healthcare provider who specializes in hormone therapy. A BHRT provider can comprehensively evaluate your hormonal health, discuss the potential risks and benefits of BHRT in the context of your individual health profile and monitor your treatment closely to mitigate any adverse effects. Consulting a healthcare provider is vital to ensuring that your journey with BHRT is safe and effective, tailored to meet your unique health needs and goals.

The North American Menopause Society advised that, “Many factors will be part of a woman’s decision to use a particular hormone product — her age, her risks, her preferences, available treatment options and the cost of the product. Do her potential benefits outweigh her potential risks? Only after examining and understanding her own situation and after a thorough consultation with her clinician can a woman make the best treatment choice.”
